Great photo taken at my Build a Better Now keynote in New York State yesterday for 350 education professionals, all of whom are transforming the lives of young people.
Reminding people that they matter and that the work they do is meaningful was easy when these people are literal world changers every single day.
When I started deeply exploring the work of cultural anthropologist Ernest Becker and his mentor, Otto Rank, in the mid 1990’s, I knew the psychological implications of talking about people mattering would be long lasting but never could have dreamed that this message would resonate so deeply with people and that it would take me to twenty-seven countries as a speaker and over five hundred shows with my band sharing these ideas in lyrical form. But it has. And it continues to!
We talked about major sections of my book: believing in the possibility of kindness, keeping your eyes on the knife (the most mission critical task in front of you) and focusing on what matters most. And we laughed all the while too.
People clearly matter most, both within any organization and also in terms of the people served by that organization. I could happily pitch and say that a solid keynote speaker helps to amplify this by inspiring teams to connect and laugh together and learn to lead with self-driven initiative....but instead I will say that like I often do for groups doing great work, I reminded this one of the effect they have on people outside of the room, people who they might never even meet.
The core belief that people are a company or organizations greatest asset is limited only by scope and field of vision. When we realize that we have impact beyond the walls of the organization, employee engagement is reinforced and enhanced, because we embed the idea that the effects of our work will reverberate far beyond the scope of our day to day.
I write about it in my book, discussing the reverberation effect. My keynotes talk about it too and help to transform how organizations not only see their people but how those people see themselves. Reverberation is mission-driven. It is the reminder that after ever authentic action, that the effects of that action live on and expand beyond the team, to the people affected positively, and then beyond that as well.
We might never see the results of our work. We might never know it. But if you want to truly energize your team with clarity, vision, and especially passion, to infuse them with ideas around reverberation (ask me anytime for details!) and you'll create conditions where people uplift and enhance one another and outperform. As a keynote speaker, I am to bring that to the groups I serve.
Speaking is all about powerful connection and I felt that yesterday for sure, even 3000 miles from home! (Thank you Scott Jensen for the great photo!)
