Founded by Greg Bennick and David Whitson, and rooted in psychology, pedagogy, and social theory, The Legacy Project exists to comprehend how people can move from suffering to survival, and from extreme trauma to reconcilation.
The project centered around extended international student trips to dive deep into conflict and resolution. These trips continued in the first phase of the project for over a decade and were transformative to the people we met internationally and to the students themselves.
Multiple students have cited their involvement with The Legacy Project as being instrumental for deciding on colleges, majors, and ultimately their life’s work.
The trips largely took place before the internet became a repository for every action in the moment, and as a result, the content here has been reconstructed from archived sources and is in process.
The Legacy Project's Vision
.jpg)
The Legacy Project began as a pursuit of answers to some fundamental questions: What if you grew up next door to a concentration camp? Or, if your neighbor disappeared one day, never to return? What if you had grown up under apartheid, or with AIDS, or in the midst of economic devastation. How might your life be different?
How would you behave if a group that had always oppressed your people was suddenly vulnerable and under your control? Would you seek vengeance, or uphold a higher standard?
Who We Are

Founded in 2006 by Greg Bennick and David Whitson, The Legacy Project is an independent endeavor to better understand how humans can transition from violent social conflict to peace, justice, and reconciliation.
At the center of our work are student study trips to countries struggling to resolve their own legacies of violence, including Poland in 2007, South Africa in 2008, Chile and Argentina in 2009, Canada in 2012, South America (Chile and Argentina) in spring of 2014, and a trip to Rwanda/Uganda in 2016.
