I wrote a law. Like a real one.

Updated: May 15

Want real inspiration about changing your world and building a better now? This post isn't about theory or ideas, its about practical approaches to changing situations for the better, and one particular situation that affected an entire generation.

Listen to KUOW Public Radio/NPR/Jonathan Zwickel's brilliant multi-part podcast documenting our struggle to overthrow and replace the Teen Dance Ordinance in Seattle. This was a law that restricted access to music during a time when the world was focused on the city as an epicenter for music, arts, and culture.

Jonathan and his team did an incredible job. The final episode comes out next week, so there's still time to catch up and hear one of the most unbelievable stories certainly from my lifetime, and ultimately, a story that has needed to be told for many years.

The story is a testament to the power of groups who maintain their focus and also what is possible when committed people join together to achieve a single goal. It also speaks to the idea that change can only come from outside a situation.

This was life-changing, city-changing, culture-changing experience that altered the social and political landscape in the city of Seattle permanently. And it happened both from outside and solidly from within the system.

I write about the Teen Dance Ordinance history in my book, but this podcast goes fully in depth to the entire history of the story, what we can learn from it, and explores all the people who made it happen. Available everywhere, and highly recommended.
